Defying The Odds: Will's Story
|
|
When Will Clervil Tiano first came to us many years ago, he was missing the one thing our name promises.
"It's kind of ironic that the name of the group home is called Place of Hope," Will said, "because that was the one thing I was missing was hope."
Before Will found his way to us, he spent years growing up homeless with his mother and brother, often staying in abandoned homes across South Florida. Here, we were able to give him a safe place to live, a high-level education, and a team of people who believed in him and cared for him.
In 2015, we cheered Will on as he graduated high school with honors and set his sights on a degree that would let him give back.
Seven years later, he is doing exactly that, right here with us. Will is now married and first joined our team as a Therapist and Support Specialist, at the same place he says saved his life. He has since transitioned into the role of Health & Fitness Specialist, where he works every day with kids who are walking the road he once walked. He is living proof to them that their story is not over.
"You can achieve success or become whatever you want as long as you kind of put your mind to it," Will said.
Will says he feels lucky to be that example for our kids. We feel lucky to call him part of our family.

We are proud to share that Lisa McDulin has been promoted to Vice President of Campaigns and Philanthropy at Place of Hope!
This week, the Palm Beach Post and Miami Herald recognized Lisa in their weekly list of Palm Beach County professionals who are moving up in their fields and making a difference in our community. We could not be more proud to see her named among them.
During her time with us, she has played a key role in establishing our Angel Moms program and growing our southern campus, the Leighan and David Rinker Campus, including building signature events like the Hope Bash Boca Gala and the Angel Moms Brunch and Benefit.
In her new role, Lisa will lead the campaigns and giving that make our work possible. Every gift, event, and partnership she helps build supports children and families across South Florida through foster care, housing, trafficking prevention, and family support. Her work helps create the right environments where children and families heal and thrive.
Behind every child who finds a safe home and every family that breaks a generational cycle, there is a team of people who chose to give. Lisa helps bring that community together, and we are grateful to have her leading this work.

In Florida last year, more than 2,200 child trafficking allegations were made, and over 80% of those children were living at home with parents and caregivers.
Child sex trafficking and exploitation are evolving faster than the systems built to catch them, and technology is carrying them forward.
For organizations like ours, and for the investigators and law enforcement officers working these cases, finding these children and keeping them safe is the priority.

Now Is the Perfect Time: 6 Ways to Give a Year-End Gift

The final months of the year are the season of giving. In addition to the gifts we give to the important people in our lives, this season of generosity is also the prime time to show support for the causes we love. When you give your support to Place of Hope for this or any year, not only will others benefit, but so will you.
You will be able to play a vital role in providing critical care for children, youth, and families in Palm Beach County. Depending on the gift you choose, you may also reduce your income taxes, increase your spendable income, or reduce capital gains tax.
Here are six ways you can make a difference this year. |

Save Taxes On Appreciated Stock
When you donate stocks to Place of Hope that are worth more than what you originally paid for them, you may receive an income tax charitable deduction for their fair market value, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. |

Use Your IRA For Good
If you are 70½ or older, give any amount, up to the maximum allowed by law, directly to Place of Hope without being taxed on the distribution. If you must take required minimum distributions, your gift can satisfy all or part of that obligation.
You may make a one-time election using your IRA to fund a gift that will provide you steady income for the rest of your life. Simply make tax-free charitable distributions during a single calendar year. |

Recommend A Grant
If you have a donor-advised fund, consider recommending a grant to support Place of Hope. You qualify for a federal income tax deduction in the year you contribute to the fund. |

Put An Insurance Policy To Good Use
An old policy you no longer need can make a big impact on our work. You can name Place of Hope as owner and beneficiary of an existing policy.
You qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize on your taxes.
If you continue to pay premiums on the policy, each payment is tax-deductible as a charitable gift if you itemize. |

Receive Income From Your Gift
Life income gifts such as a charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust provide you, or a beneficiary of your choice, with payments for life, and Place of Hope with support thereafter.
If you use appreciated securities to fund the gift, you may qualify for an income tax deduction based, in part, on the charitable portion of the securities' full value, in addition to eliminating up-front capital gains tax. |

Make An Immediate Impact
If you are not ready to make any of the five gifts listed, cash is a great way to give. You qualify for an income tax charitable deduction for the full value of the gift, up to 60% of your AGI.
If you write a check for less than $250, a copy of the check will suffice as a record of the gift.
Obtain a receipt for gifts of $250 or more when you itemize. |
