ICYMI: MY DISCUSSION WITH THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Joseph -
No matter where you live in the state of Florida, water quality standards affect all of us—but standards for the water flowing south toward the Everglades are much different than standards for the water moving east into our communities.

Today, I had the opportunity to speak with Assistant Secretary Telle and Lieutenant General Graham Jr., of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to review last year’s Water Resource Development Act (WRDA) during a Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee hearing.

At this very moment, there is still toxic algae blooming on Lake Okeechobee, and I used this chance to address it with Assistant Sec. Telle and Lt. Gen. Graham Jr.

My biggest question—what does the Army Corps think they can do to protect our communities while toxic water threatens our ecosystems? And what can be done to protect the Army Corps personnel who have to breathe in these detrimental chemicals at Port Mayaca and surrounding dams where toxic algae is present?

I hope to work together with the USACE as we grapple with water quality standards. No matter where you live, clean water should be the bare minimum.
