The lessons of the Gabby Petito case continue to shape conversations about how we recognize and respond to domestic violence.
On October 13, Jim Schmidt, Gabby Petito’s stepfather and Board Member of The Gabby Petito Foundation, will join SafeSpace’s From Awareness to Action: Safety. Solidarity. Solutions. Domestic Violence Summit as the featured keynote presenter, helping turn those lessons into practical tools for professionals across disciplines.
Jim will lead sessions that move from case-based learning to practical professional response, including:
• Beyond the Headlines: Lessons Every Professional Can Learn from the Gabby Petito Case
• Seeing What Trauma Hides: Understanding Victim Behavior and Improving Our Response
• From Contact to Courtroom: Recognizing Risk, Documenting Evidence, and Improving Outcomes
• Survivor Impact Story and Every Link Matters: Building a Coordinated Response That Saves Lives
Participants will strengthen their ability to recognize high-risk indicators, understand how trauma can shape survivor behavior, improve victim-centered communication and documentation, and strengthen coordination across disciplines.
Who should attend: Law enforcement, first responders, healthcare and mental health professionals, victim advocates, child welfare professionals, attorneys, and others whose work intersects with domestic violence.
The updated agenda also includes discipline-specific breakout tracks. Trainer and session details for Healthcare/Mental Health and Advocacy/Child Welfare will be announced as they are finalized.
