| ATTN Floridians! NOAA Fisheries Announces Emergency Rule to Increase Gulf Red Grouper Catch Limits |
NOAA Fisheries is implementing an Emergency Rule that will increase the Gulf of America red grouper catch limits. This Emergency Rule will be in effect on August 6th, 2025 through the end of the fishing year on December 31, 2025, and will not be extended.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Reductions in catch limits to red grouper (Amendment 53, 2021) and other co-occurring species (e.g. gag and greater amberjack) have resulted in economic hardship to commercial businesses that rely on Gulf reef fish.
- The Gulf Council requested an Emergency Rule that would increase Gulf red grouper catch limits as follows:
- The overfishing limit will be set at 10.64 million pounds (mp).
- The acceptable biological catch (ABC) will be set at 8.28 mp.
- The stock annual catch limit (ACL) will be set at 7.45 mp (90% of the ABC).
- The commercial and recreational ACL and annual catch target will be set based on commercial and recreational allocations and buffers currently in place for Gulf red grouper.
- The Gulf Council is working on an amendment to increase red grouper catch limits, but this amendment is not expected to be effective until 2026.
