New Era for Stuart Police Department: Swearing-In of Chief Zenelovic, Promotions & New Officers
On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the historic Lyric Theatre was filled with community members, city leaders, neighboring law enforcement officers, and proud families as the Stuart Police Department held a special promotional ceremony.
In a memorable moment, Chief Flamur Zenelovic was officially sworn in by the Honorable Judge Darren Steele, marking the beginning of his leadership of the department. The ceremony also celebrated the promotions of Michael Gerwan to Captain and John “Billy” Martin to Sergeant. In addition, new officers Cameron Carter, Hunter Smith, and Anthony Burns were proudly sworn in.
City Manager Michael Mortell welcomed attendees and acknowledged the dedication of the department. He spoke about the importance of public trust, the weight of the oaths taken, and the commitment each officer makes to serve the community with integrity and courage.
Retired Chief Joseph Tumminelli reflected on his 28 years at the Stuart Police Department, 7-plus-years of those as chief, and offered heartfelt advice to his successor before ceremonially passing the captain’s hat to Chief Zenelovic. His words were both a tribute to his own service and a charge to the future.
We thank Chief Tumminelli for his leadership and dedication, and we wish him well in retirement.
Congratulations to Chief Zenelovic, Captain Gerwan, Sergeant Martin, and new officers Carter, Smith, and Burns. We also recognize John Reddick, promoted to Lieutenant, who was unable to attend the ceremony.
Special thanks to Judge Steele for officiating the oaths, Pastor Jerry Gore for the invocation and benediction, the Lyric Theatre for hosting, and Googan Coffee Shop for providing post-ceremony refreshments. |

Did You Know the City has a Stormwater Hotline?
“Holy storm drain, Batman! That construction gunk is heading straight for the waterway!”
“Quick, Robin! To the Stormwater Hotline!”
Okay, maybe not quite Gotham-level drama, but protecting our waterways is serious business—and we need your help! City crews can’t be everywhere at once, so if you spot something fishy (and not the good kind), give us a shout.
Keep an eye out for:
• Paint, oil, yard waste or trash being dumped into drains
• Muddy water flowing off construction sites
• Suspected illegal dumping
• Sanitary sewer overflows or strange discharges
Spotted something? Report it!
• Call the Stormwater Hotline at (772) 600-1260
• Email: stormwaterhotline@ci.stuart.fl.us
• Or snap a pic and use the SeeClickFix app
Let’s keep our streets—and our river—clean! |

Disaster Preparedness
Easy Ways to Build a Hurricane Disaster Kit
Don't wait until a storm is on the radar—start now!
Hurricane season is here, and being prepared is key to keeping your family safe and comfortable if a storm hits. The good news? Building a disaster supply kit doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Start small and build over time—just a few extra items each grocery trip will go a long way.
Here’s what to include in your basic kit:
• Water – At least one gallon per person per day for seven days. Don’t forget your pets!
• Non-perishable food – Canned goods, peanut butter, granola bars, trail mix, and shelf-stable milk are great staples.
• Manual can opener – No power, no problem.
• Medications – A 7-day supply of prescription and over-the-counter meds.
• First aid kit – Include bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and any specialty items your family may need.
• Flashlights and batteries – Opt for LED lights for longer battery life.
• Chargers and power banks – Keep phones charged for emergency alerts and communication.
• Hygiene items – Wipes, hand sanitizer, paper towels, and toilet paper.
• Important documents – Store insurance papers, IDs, and medical records in a waterproof container.
• Cash – ATMs and card readers may be down after a storm.
• Comfort items – Games, books, snacks for kids (and adults too).
Make sure to tailor your kit for your household’s specific needs—babies, seniors, and pets may need special supplies.
♥ Pro tip: Spread out the cost! Add just a few items to your cart each week, and your kit will come together quickly and painlessly.
