Sen. Rick Scott Reintroduces Protect Our Seniors Act to Preserve Social Security and Medicare

Senator Rick Scott announced the reintroduction of his Protect Our Seniors Act to preserve and protect Social Security and Medicare. After four years of the Biden-Harris administration fueling inflation with reckless policies that pushed Social Security and Medicare closer to insolvency, Senator Scott’s bill will help protect the benefits of these important programs for those who depend on them.

Senator Rick Scott said: “As Florida’s U.S. Senator and the Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, preserving the benefits of Social Security and Medicare is one of my top priorities. So many Floridians depend on these programs, and after four long years of Joe Biden’s reckless policies and high inflation pushing them closer to insolvency, we must take action to protect them and keep our promises to beneficiaries. My bill, the Protect Our Seniors Act, will safeguard the benefits of these critical entitlements by 1) establishing a rule to prevent cuts to Medicare and Social Security, and 2) ensuring that any savings to the Medicare program stay in the Medicare program. I’ll be working closely with my colleagues on the Committee and President Trump to get this bill passed, grow our economy to improve the long-term health of Social Security and Medicare and make Washington work better for our seniors. Together with President Trump, we can bring our nation into its golden age for all Americans, including those enjoying their golden years of life.”

Senator Scott’s Protect Our Seniors Act includes key provisions to protect the benefits of Social Security and Medicare and promote the long-term solvency of these critical programs:
  • Creates a Budget Point of Order, and requires a two-thirds vote, against any legislation that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) determines would reduce or cut existing Medicare and Social Security benefits.
  • Amends CBO scoring laws such that savings to Medicare cannot be used to offset or pay-for spending outside of Medicare.
    • NOTE: This tactic was used by Democrats for the “infrastructure bill” as well as the Inflation Reduction Act where Medicare savings were used as ‘pay-fors’ for Green New Deal projects and other wasteful spending.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT… Florida Politics: Rick Scott Addresses Issue of Senior Loneliness

In case you missed it, Florida Politics highlighted U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman Rick Scott’s re-introduction of the Social Engagement and Network Initiatives for Older Relief (SENIOR) Act to tackle the issue of loneliness amongst America’s seniors. For far too long senior citizens have been suffering from varying health issues that have yet to be addressed legislatively by Congress. The bipartisan SENIOR Act is an important step in ensuring American seniors have the necessary support to enjoy their later years to the fullest and is supported by the Foundation for Social Connection’s Action Network.

Read more on Chairman Scott’s SENIOR Act in Florida Politics, as reported by A.G. Gancarski:
“Older people are often neglected in their twilight years, and Florida’s senior Senator sees a federal role in making sure they aren’t.

“Florida is blessed to have a wonderful senior population, and in my state and across the nation, seniors contribute greatly when given opportunities to be active members in their communities. Combating the feeling of isolation and loneliness for our aging community has endless benefits – from better mental and physical health to stronger, multigenerational relationships with families and communities. As Chairman of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, I’m proud to lead this bill and fight to better support American seniors,’ Scott said Friday.”

The SENIOR Act would:
  • Promote programs that combat loneliness and support community integration for seniors by adding “loneliness” to the definition of “disease prevention and health promotion services” under the Older Americans Act.
  • Direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to prepare a report on the impacts of loneliness on seniors and propose solutions for identified impacts; and
  • Through the report, analyze the relationship between the strength of multigenerational family units, loneliness, and seniors.
