Soaring Costs of Lawsuits Impact Households Nationwide
Research uncovers the hidden financial strain from lawsuits in your state—and the price tag is growing.
The costs of lawsuits, specifically tort cases, are massive and rising.

What are torts? The "tort system" is a key part of the U.S. legal framework, helping businesses and individuals receive compensation for harm. It handles claims through federal, state, and local courts and methods like arbitration and mediation.

Abusing the system: While the tort system aims to deliver justice for genuine harm, some lawyers exploit it.

Why it matters: This misuse can turn a system meant to help injured parties into a tool for personal profit, harming both defendants and those it was meant to protect.

Out of control: Research from the U.S. Chamber's Institute for Legal Reform reveals that in a single year, the U.S. tort system costs $529 billion, or 2.1% of the nation's economy.

  • This amounts to $4,207 per American household on average.
  • Costs may rise to $900 billion by 2030 if trends continue.

Chamber in action: Chamber in action: The U.S. Chamber advocates for reforms to curb abuses of the legal system, which include protecting consumers, ensuring fair defendant payouts, capping excessive damages, and preventing forum shopping.
  • Similar reforms in West Virginia led to a 20% drop in tort costs since 2016, making it the state with the lowest per-household tort expenses, at $2,100.
