| Why Congress Must Keep America Moving |
| Secure the future of our roads, bridges, and transit systems. |

Our economy runs on our roads, bridges, and transit systems. When goods can't get to market, and workers can't get to their jobs, businesses suffer. But without action from Congress, critical transportation programs could face delays, higher costs, and disruptions that hurt families and communities.
What’s happening: The U.S. Chamber, along with over 20 national groups, has formed the Move America Coalition. This group is working to make sure Congress renews key surface transportation programs and secures the long-term funding of America’s roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. The current bipartisan transportation law will expire in September 2026.
Congress can address two challenges:
- Highway Trust Fund: For years, gas taxes have helped pay for roads and public transportation. However, improved fuel efficiency and the growing adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles have eroded gas tax revenues. By 2026, there will be a $33 billion shortfall in the funding used to maintain our infrastructure. Congress must update how we fund roads so that everyone who uses them pays their fair share.
- Permitting Reform: Right now, it takes too long to build new transportation projects—on average, 7½ years! Congress can make the process faster and less expensive by cutting red tape and modernizing how decisions are made.
Why it matters: When transportation systems work, people can get to work, goods can reach stores, and communities can thrive. That’s why the Move America Coalition is bringing together people who design, build, and use our transportation network to push for action that will keep America moving and support long-term economic growth. |
