Reminder: It's time for your monthly catch-up 11/2/2026

Dear FP Friends & Family,

I’m excited to share a fun opportunity with you, just after I bring you up to speed on a few things I want you to know. Family homelessness often begins long before a family loses housing. It starts when housing costs consume so much of a paycheck that one setback can push a family into crisis.

This month, as we gear up for our big event (our Bed Races on November 14th), we want you—our Family Promise family—to be the most knowledgeable people in our community about childhood homelessness and to, in turn, educate everyone you know about the realities we see every day.

Our friends at Schoolhouse Connection shared that advocacy creates awareness, and awareness creates action. Today, more than 1.5 million students in America are experiencing homelessness, and nearly half struggle with chronic absenteeism because of housing instability. Research shows that when people better understand the causes of homelessness, they are more likely to support the solutions that work. Awareness changes public opinion, advocacy influences policy, and together they create real opportunities for families and children to achieve stability and hope.

The more we know, the better we can create solutions for lasting change! That said we have an opportunity for you to create awareness about childhood and family homelessness in Martin County (and in our country)! But first—here are a few local and national stats for you:

NUMBERS TO KNOW:
  • 25% of homeless students move 3-4 times during the school year
  • 51% of homeless children in the United States are under age 5
  • Homeless students are 9x more likely to repeat a grade.
  • Just one unexpected expense can lead to a missed rent payment, resulting in eviction.
  • Impact of Homelessness on Children: 3 times more likely to be placed in special education programs, 8-9 times more likely to repeat a grade, 42% dropped out of school at least once, 7 times more likely to attempt suicide, 47% suffer from anxiety, depression or withdrawal.
  • In 2019, about 1 in 4 renter households (24%) were severely cost-burdened, meaning they spent more than 50% of their income on rent and utilities/housing costs. [jchs.harvard.edu], [jchs.harvard.edu]
  • By 2022, the number of renter households experiencing housing cost burdens reached a record high, with about half of all renters spending more than 30% of their income on housing. [jchs.harvard.edu]
  • In 2024, there were 22.7 million cost-burdened renter households, representing 49% of all renters. [jchs.harvard.edu], [congress.gov]
  • Looking specifically at the most severe category, 21.6 million households nationwide (renters and homeowners combined) were spending more than 50% of their income on housing in 2024, a record high. [jchs.harvard.edu]
  • Specific to Martin County, FL – 43% of martin county households are cost burdened.
  • The number of students reported as homelessness to their local school district is 1/3 the true number of children experiencing the loss of their home. About 1/3 children are not school aged and do not report and half of school aged students do not report for fear of being removed from their parents.
  • Martin County’s School District Homeless Student count is 612 students = 1,836 students experiencing homelessness (see bullet point above).
  • More than 1.5 million public school students experienced homelessness during the 2023-2024 school year, the highest number ever recorded since national reporting began.
  • Nearly 48% of identified homeless students were chronically absent, highlighting the profound impact housing instability has on education and long-term success.
  • A national poll found that 76% of Americans believe more people are becoming homeless for the first time than in the past, showing growing public concern about the issue.
  • 45% of Americans reported noticing an increase in homelessness in their own communities over the previous year.

Evidence That Advocacy Can Lead to Change
  • Federal and local advocacy efforts have helped secure and protect housing programs that serve tens of thousands of people. For example, advocates have warned that policy changes threatening homelessness programs could place 97,000 people at risk of losing housing assistance, demonstrating how advocacy directly affects outcomes for vulnerable families. [endhomelessness.org], [publicrigh...roject.org]
  • Research and public education campaigns help shift public opinion toward addressing root causes such as housing affordability, wages, and inflation rather than relying solely on misconceptions about homelessness. [endhomelessness.org]

The good news is—through our five core programs, we are able to help prevent homelessness, provide temporary shelter, transitional housing, shared housing, shelter diversion, a path to homeownership or return to independent rental housing and stabilization.

For your opportunity to learn more and to make an impact in a very fun way--I invite you to attend our free event—our 7th Annual Bed Races (yes, we race beds on wheels)—on November 14th! Grab the kids, your friends, and family and join us. For more information, please scroll to our events section below.

God’s Peace & Promise,

Madeleine

Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council:

Continuum of Care

You know the saying, "It takes a village"? Well, when it comes to helping families experiencing homelessness, it really does!

We're incredibly thankful for our partners at Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council (TCHSC), who work tirelessly to bring organizations and resources together across Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties.

As the lead agency for our region's Continuum of Care (CoC), TCHSC helps coordinate a network of service providers, nonprofits, government agencies, and community partners working toward one common goal: preventing and ending homelessness.

Through bi-monthly meetings, organizations like Family Promise have the opportunity to connect, share resources, identify gaps in services, and learn how we can better support the people we serve. Because sometimes the answer isn't what your organization can provide, but knowing who CAN!

And their partnership with Family Promise goes well beyond those meetings!

TCHSC also plays an important role in our housing efforts right here in Martin County, helping make SIX housing units available for families receiving case management and support through Family Promise of Martin County. That's six opportunities for families to have a place to call home while working toward lasting stability and independence!

We know the TCHSC team has a LOT on their plates, but what stands out to us is their genuine desire to help people. Behind every meeting, referral, and housing opportunity are people who truly care about making a difference.

To our friends at TCHSC, THANK YOU! Thank you for the work you do behind the scenes, for keeping our community connected, and for helping us open more doors for local families.

This is what community partnership is all about. Together, we can do SO much more!

Every month, Family Promise receives countless calls from families in need. While we can't share every story, we want to take a moment to celebrate some of the incredible wins made possible through the support of our community. (Be sure to ask us about our Wins Board the next time you visit our office!)
  • A New Beginning! We recently welcomed a second family into our Shelter Program. This single mom of two young daughters is a college graduate with a degree, a reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone, regardless of education or background. She's already taking exciting steps forward, having received an offer for a full-time position as a paraprofessional with the Martin County School District! She's currently completing her background screening, and we're cheering her on as she works toward a fresh start for herself and her girls!

  • TWO Wins for One Mama! Remember our shelter family with a teenage son and a 2-year-old daughter? Well, Mom landed a full-time job this month! AND she's enrolled in GED classes to continue her education. She's not just working toward stability today; she's investing in a brighter tomorrow for herself and her children. We are SO proud of her!

  • Moving On & Moving Forward! One of our Almost Home Transitional Housing families took another step toward independence this month! With housing costs continuing to be a challenge, this single mom of a teenage son and 7-year-old daughter secured a room to rent in a shared home. Meanwhile, another mom in our program, rebuilding after a recent divorce, has already saved over $2,400 toward securing independent housing of her own. Every step forward matters, and we're cheering them both on!

  • Keeping Families Housed! Through our Eviction Prevention Programs — HUMI (Help Us Move In) and HUSI (Help Us Stay In) — we invested more than $6,630 in October to help local families stay in their homes or move into stable housing. Each request is carefully reviewed, including income, expenses, and supporting documentation, because our goal isn't simply to help families get through today. It's to help them build a sustainable path toward long-term stability!

  • Wishlist FULFILLED! Remember that LONG wishlist we shared in last month's newsletter? Well, someone went shopping... and BOUGHT EVERYTHING ON IT! Every. Single. Item. We had the BEST time opening all those boxes. It truly felt like Christmas morning at the Family Center! To our incredibly generous donor, THANK YOU for seeing a need and filling it in such a BIG way. Our hearts (and our shelves!) are FULL!

Delivery day! So thankful to our generous donor!

Now THIS Is a Powerhouse! 💜

Some community partnerships go far beyond an event, a donation, or a social media post. And our friends at BNI Treasure Coast Powerhouse are living proof!

Our Executive Director, Madeleine Bozone Greenwood, meets weekly with this incredible group of local professionals, and let us tell you, they have earned their name!

While we loved seeing their smiling faces at our Thankful Tuesday gathering, their involvement with Family Promise of Martin County goes SO much further.

These folks SHOW UP. All. Year. Long.

Need a plumber? They've got us. An air-conditioning issue? They're there. Electrical work? They step in. Thanksgiving meals for our families? They've helped make those happen, too!

From sponsoring events, creating forms for those events, and connecting families with housing opportunities to sharing their expertise in real estate and mortgages, these professionals have found countless ways to support our mission.

And because apparently they haven't done enough already, they've even put together a team for our 7th Annual Bed Races!

What we love most is that this isn't a one-time act of generosity. It's a group of people who have become part of our Family Promise family. They see a need, recognize how their unique skills and connections can help, and find a way to make things happen.

A BIG Shoutout to Our Powerhouse Friends!

We're so grateful for the members and businesses who make up this incredible chapter:

To our BNI Powerhouse family: THANK YOU!

Thank you for answering the calls, making the connections, sharing your expertise, opening doors, and showing up again and again.

You remind us that ending family homelessness isn't something one organization can accomplish alone. It takes a COMMUNITY.

A Little Mindfulness & a LOT of Creativity!

October's Program Night was all about taking care of ourselves, inside and out!

We were thrilled to welcome Jessica from Mangata Wellness, who led our parents and teens in a wonderful conversation about the importance of mental health and emotional well-being. From mindfulness and breathing exercises to simple ways to manage stress, Jessica shared practical tools our families can use in their everyday lives.

But the evening was about more than learning how to take a deep breath! We also wanted our families to get to know Jessica, learn about Mangata Wellness, and understand that additional mental health support is available for both parents AND children through our partnership. Because sometimes, taking that next step toward stability means taking care of what's happening on the inside, too.

Meanwhile, back at the Family Center, our youngest artists were busy creating masterpieces with The Little Art Bus!

We were SO happy to welcome Abby, creator and owner of The Little Art Bus, back for another evening of creativity, along with wonderful volunteers Jen and Misty. There was painting aplenty, and lots of fun!

A BIG thank-you to Jessica, Abby, Jen, and Misty for pouring into our families in such different but equally meaningful ways.

From peaceful minds to paint-covered hands, it was another wonderful Program Night!

It was a GREAT opportunity to spread the word about our upcoming 7th Annual Bed Races on November 14th, connect with our community, and have a little Halloween fun along the way!

A BIG thank-you to the City of Stuart for another wonderful event!
