east Riverside Neighborhood Clean-Up saturday, Nov. 16, 2024

The City of Stuart is hosting its next Neighborhood Clean-up, this one for the East Riverside residential neighborhoods, this Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
During the clean-up, City of Stuart sanitation trucks comb the streets of East Riverside to collect bulk items, such as appliances and furniture, miscellaneous trash, and yard waste that residents place at the curb. There is no fee for the extra pickups during this cleanup.
The Martin County HazMobile will be parked at the host location in the empty lot at Oriole Avenue and Riverside Drive, for the convenient drop-off of household hazardous waste such as paints, oils, and household cleaners. Residents may also bring old electronics for recycling to this same central location.
For a complete listing of acceptable hazardous materials or to find out what month the City will host a Neighborhood Cleanup in your neighborhood, visit www.cityofstuart.us or call (772) 600-1206.
See you tomorrow!

Veterans celebrated in Stuart

The annual Veterans Day Parade on November 11, 2024, united the community in celebrating and honoring our nation's veterans, drawing attendees of all ages.
The event began promptly at 10 a.m. with a helicopter flyover by the Martin County Sheriff's Department over the East Ocean Boulevard parade route. On the ground, the Stuart Police Department led the procession with precision and pride.
Despite local schools being in session, students played a prominent role in the festivities. Area school bands and JROTC programs, were joined by a diverse array of community groups, government representatives, and civic organizations. Together, they created a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who have served our country.
A ceremony in Memorial Park followed the parade.

Stuart police urge vigilance and Tips against scams

Quick-Thinking Caretaker and Stuart Police Save Elderly Man from $10,000 Scam

Last week, a vigilant caretaker and a dedicated Stuart Police officer prevented an elderly man with dementia from losing $10,000 to a scam.
The caretaker arrived at the man’s home and immediately noticed something was wrong. The man, confused and claiming "they were spying on him," revealed he had been instructed by scammers posing as customer service representatives to pack $10,000 in cash inside a book and overnight it to New Jersey.
Recognizing the scam, the caretaker contacted Stuart Police. An officer quickly intervened, tracking the package, which was already enroute through Palm Beach International Airport. Despite after-hours challenges, the officer managed to intercept the shipment in Kentucky and have it returned to the police department.
The relieved victim and his caretaker retrieved the cash. This swift teamwork prevented a devastating financial loss.
Authorities remind everyone to stay alert for unsolicited requests for money and to seek help if something feels suspicious.

Here are five essential tips to help you keep safe from phone scams

(1) Practice Skepticism
Be wary of unsolicited calls. Legitimate companies rarely request personal or financial information over the phone, especially if they initiated the call.
(2) Verify Caller Identity
Never to provide sensitive information to a caller. Instead, hang up and call the company directly using the phone number listed on an official website, bill, or statement.
(3) Set Up Call Screening Tools
Use call-blocking apps or enable built-in features on phones to filter out potential scam calls. Registering their number with the National Do Not Call Registry can also reduce unwanted calls.
(4) Say "No"
Confidently say, "I don’t conduct business over the phone. Please send me this information in writing." This response can deter scammers.
(5) Stay Informed
Stay informed about common phone scams and share this knowledge with family members. Recognize red flags, such as urgent requests for money or threats of consequences for not complying.
