  • About 37.5% of the funds raised would be from people who don’t live in Martin County!
  • It would last for 10 years and could raise about $183 million.
  • Revenue raised can be leveraged to get state and federal matching funds – stretching our local dollars further.

  • Our sales tax would increase from 6.5% to 7% - comparable to many other counties in Florida
  • The sales tax would NOT apply to groceries, prescription medications, medical supplies, school supplies or to the portion of any purchase over $5,000.
  • We’ve had a half-cent sales tax before for this same purpose, but it expired in 2016.

We know some voters lack trust in government. That’s why we built safeguards into the referendum and ordinance language to ensure the funds are only spent the way voters intended.
  • A Citizens Environmental Lands Oversight Committee will screen proposed purchases and serve as the advisory panel for the Martin County Board of County Commissioners
  • An Annual Audit of land and properties purchased will be conducted.
  • Monies raised can only be used for purchases within the four key areas – Blueways, Indian River Lagoon watershed, St. Lucie & Loxahatchee headwaters and Pal-Mar.
  • Purchases can only be made from willing sellers
  • Some funds may be used to buy permanent Conservation Easements to help sustain working farms by limiting uses of the land to protect its environmental value while keeping the land on the tax rolls.

This referendum puts the future of Martin County in our own hands. We urge all Martin County voters to educate themselves on the referendum, get involved and help spread the word. The clock is ticking. If we don’t buy the land now, it can be developed and gone forever.
