Monthly Update on the Florida Prosperity Initiative's Efforts to Replace Childhood Poverty with Prosperity and Self-Sufficiency
Welcome to the one monthly newsletter in America dedicated to helping leaders make Florida the first state in the nation to cut childhood poverty in half and replace poverty with self-sufficiency. We’re all in, and we’re glad you are, too!

Despite Florida businesses creating 1 in every 15 new jobs in America, currently, Florida has 714,768 children living in povertyNext month, we'll be talking about how the poverty numbers are changing in Florida and how the business community can get involved to help us reach our goal of becoming the nation's standard for replacing poverty with prosperity. Through the Florida Prosperity Initiative, we recognize that focusing together for collective impact is the most efficient way to create pathways to economic opportunity for Florida's next generation, one zip code at a time. We invite you to learn more about what’s known nationally as “The Florida Model” and about becoming a zip code leader or root cause leader for your zip code.

As we double down on eradicating childhood poverty in 2026, here is an overview of the 10 Root Causes of Poverty. Tackling the 10 Root Causes of Poverty: Why Business Leadership Matters at the Zip Code Level

Replacing Generational Childhood Poverty with Pathways to Prosperity and Self-Sufficiency

By: Heather Cogar, Statewide Director of Community Engagement, Florida Chamber Foundation Florida Prosperity Initiative

Economic development comes in many forms. Generational poverty is one of the most pressing challenges impacting Florida’s long-term economic competitiveness, and addressing itdown to the zip code levelis central to the mission of the Florida Prosperity Initiative. Poverty doesn’t just affect individuals and families; it drives preventable disease, increases health care costs and reduces workforce productivity.

What's Working in Our Zip Codes Today?

As our President, Mark Wilson, often says, “Florida has pockets of excellence, but we need patterns of excellence.” Finding best practices in one area that can be replicated and scaled across Florida’s 983 zip codes is what the Florida Prosperity Initiative calls a “promising practice.” We know that government programs alone won’t solve our challenges, and we know that the ingenuity of local businesses needs to be amplified, replicated, and scaled through our promising practices platform.

This month, we focus on Lack of Access to Quality Healthcare as a root cause of poverty.

Florida Prosperity Initiative's Heather Cogar Amplifies Voice for Local Community at Citrus County Legislative Days
Over the past two days in Tallahassee, Heather Cogar, Florida Prosperity Initiative Statewide Director of Community Engagement, joined fellow Citrus County leaders during Legislative Days to ensure the voice of the community was heard at the state level. Through meaningful conversations with key decision-makers, including our very own Frank Walker, Florida Chamber Executive Vice President of Government & Political Relations, First Lady Casey DeSantis (whom Heather introduced), Secretary of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Matt Walsh, Secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families Taylor Hatch, and incoming Speaker of the Florida House Sam Garrison, the group focused on supporting children, strengthening families, and building partnerships that create real solutions.

While in Citrus County, Heather also had dinner with Citrus County Sheriff David Vincent and his wife, Angel Vincent, two influential partners whose firsthand view of children in crisis continues to shape how leaders approach service, prevention, and community engagement.
Taking time away from home and business, these passionate leaders demonstrated their ongoing commitment to the future of Citrus County and the families who call it home.
