| JANUARY IS HUMAN TRAFFICKING PREVENTION MONTH |

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time to come together as a community to stand against this devastating crime that affects thousands of lives locally. It is an opportunity to raise awareness, educate ourselves and others, and take meaningful action to protect those most vulnerable.
Place of Hope is a leader in the fight against child exploitation and human trafficking, and is on the forefront of prevention, intervention, and awareness. Across our footprint, each year Place of Hope is serving hundreds of children, young adults who have been sexually exploited, trafficked or at-risk of being groomed and exploited and trafficked with targeted therapy, high-quality foster care, comprehensive case management and affordable transitional housing with an independent living program.
We are not only on the front lines, but also upstream providing critical prevention and education programs and services to stop human trafficking before it can manifest.

Can you or your child identify sextortion? Can you?
Sextortion typically follows a clear pattern of escalation:
- Initial Contact: The predator reaches out, often pretending to be a peer or someone appealing to the victim. They start with compliments or offers of friendship.
- Grooming: The predator builds an emotional connection, making the victim feel validated or special, and gradually introducing private conversations.
- Coercion: The predator pressures the victim into sharing explicit content, sometimes using threats or promises to create a sense of security.
- Escalation: Once explicit material is obtained, the predator demands more content or money, threatening to release the material if the victim refuses or tries to report them.
Recognizing these stages early can help you intervene before the situation escalates further.
