STUART, FL – March 06, 2026 — Chapman School of Seamanship, an internationally recognized 501(c)3, nonprofit marine training institution and the State of Florida’s designated maritime school, has announced the launch of its new Vessel Legacy Program. This initiative allows boat and yacht owners to donate vessels to support maritime education, workforce development, and safety programs for boaters of all ages.
Through the program, donated vessels may be used as ‘at-the-helm’ training platforms for students enrolled in Chapman’s programs or placed into a structured lease program that generates funding to support the school’s mission.
“Boating has a $31.3 billion annual economic impact in Florida, and South Florida continues to experience a significant skilled labor shortage in the marine industry.” said Jim Allen, Executive Director. “The Vessel Legacy Program allows boat owners to turn their vessel into a lasting investment in the future of our country.”
Chapman trains hundreds of students each year for careers across the maritime and marine industries, including professional mariners, marine technicians, and marine surveyors. In addition to workforce training, the school provides recreational boating classes, youth boating and environmental stewardship programming focused on protecting Florida’s waterways, and career training opportunities for veterans transitioning into the private workforce sector.
“Donating a yacht provides owners with a smart alternative to selling or trading their vessel while supporting Chapman’s mission. Donors may also be eligible for a charitable tax deduction”, said Allen. “Chapman’s Legacy program also creates an opportunity for yacht brokers to assist clients seeking philanthropic options for vessel disposition. Licensed brokers who refer vessels to the program may be eligible for a referral commission of up to 15%.
