STUART, FL — Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Clinic is honored to announce a generous $100,000 gift from the Allen Family Foundation in memory of Dr. Karen L. Allen, PhD. The donation, hand delivered in May 2025 by her brother, Rex Allen, and his wife, Cheryl Allen, celebrates Dr. Allen’s lifelong commitment to ethics, education, and compassionate care. He shared that Dr. Allen held a deep admiration for VIM Clinic’s work and the people behind it. He noted, “This gift reflects Karen’s deep belief in compassionate, accessible care. She admired VIM Clinic’s mission and wanted to ensure it could continue offering healthcare to those in need, with dignity and purpose.”

Dr. Allen, who passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, was a longtime resident of Stuart, Florida. She held a PhD in Philosophy from Claremont College in California and spent her distinguished career teaching Philosophy and Biomedical Ethics at more than eight colleges and universities across the country. Her academic work reflected a deep passion for guiding others through some of the most complex questions in healthcare and human dignity.

In addition to her career in higher education, Dr. Allen served as the Executive Director of both the Allen Family Foundation and the Allen Scholarship Fund. She also contributed her expertise as a longtime member of the Martin Memorial Hospital System Board, advising on critical issues in biomedical ethics.

“This incredible gift will have a lasting impact on our clinic and our patients,” said Dr. Jordan Bromberg, Medical Director of VIM Clinic. “Dr. Allen’s legacy of ethical leadership and dedication to health education aligns beautifully with our mission of compassionate, volunteer-driven care.”

The donation will support VIM Clinic’s ongoing work providing free medical services to uninsured adults in Martin County. In 2024 alone, VIM provided over 11,000 medical visits with the help of volunteer medical professionals and generous community supporters.

“We are deeply grateful to the Allen Family Foundation and to Rex Allen for honoring Dr. Karen Allen’s memory in such a meaningful way,” said VIM Executive Director Mary Fields. “Her legacy will live on through every patient who receives care, dignity, and hope at our clinic.”
