2026 COCHRANE REVIEW EXAMINES SPINAL MANIPULATION FOR CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN
STUART, FL — A major 2026 Cochrane review is providing an updated look at spinal manipulative therapy as a conservative treatment option for adults living with chronic low back pain.
The review analyzed 76 randomized clinical trials involving 11,866 participants and compared spinal manipulation or mobilization with sham treatment, no treatment, and other conservative approaches.
Researchers found that spinal manipulative therapy may improve pain and physical function compared with receiving no treatment. Compared with other conservative treatments, differences in pain were generally small, while modest improvements in function were reported.
The authors also emphasized an important point: chronic low back pain is rarely a one-size-fits-all problem. Differences in treatment techniques, frequency, patient characteristics, and study design made it difficult to determine one ideal approach for every patient.
For patients, the takeaway is not that one treatment is a cure. Rather, current evidence continues to support active, individualized, conservative management for many cases of chronic low back pain.
At Hope Health & Wellness in Stuart, care may combine hands-on treatment with therapeutic exercise, movement, rehabilitation, and other conservative therapies based on the patient's examination and individual needs.
Patients with persistent low back pain, pain traveling into the legs, weakness, numbness, or significant changes in function should be properly evaluated to determine the most appropriate course of care.
