Why it matters: Tariffs are wreaking havoc on small businesses nationwide as they grapple with soaring costs, cancelled orders, supply chain issues, and an uncertain future. Consumers also are feeling the effects: Americans are expected to pay $25 million more for cut flowers this Mother’s Day as the bouquet mainstays are largely imported from Colombia and Ecuador and subject to tariffs.

Big picture: U.S. Chamber Executive Vice President Neil Bradley told NewsNation that small businesses account for about one-third of U.S. imports: “If they're importing the same level of goods, small businesses are paying $9,000 a second in tariffs.”

Companies across the country are worried about having to stockpile inventory, raise prices, or worse.

  • “Additional tariffs on the components and raw materials we are importing will increase our costs and increase the likelihood of retaliatory tariffs on our exported products, adding additional headwinds against our small business,” said Tim Frey, president and CEO of MRP Bike in Grand Junction, CO. “I am very concerned about the negative impacts of a trade war and our ability to continue to support our employees and our community.”

That’s why the U.S. Chamber is calling for the Administration to:

  • Grant automatic tariff exclusions for any small business importer.

  • Provide tariff exclusions for all products that cannot be produced in the U.S. or are not readily available.

  • Establish a process to apply for a tariff exclusion if a company can demonstrate that tariffs pose a risk to American jobs.

Bottom line: The tariff situation is only getting worse, and they need relief now. Costs keep going higher—$9,000 every second of every day—threatening the survival of small businesses across the country.
