FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 17, 2025
Stuart, FL – In light of recent media coverage regarding the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, the Martin County School District wants to unequivocally assure families and the community that there will be no disruption in SRO services for the 2025-2026 school year. SROs employed by the Martin County Sheriff's Office will be on every Martin County public school campus beginning the first day of school, August 11, with full engagement in ensuring the safety and security of students and staff.
Back in May, the District and the Sheriff’s Office reached a tentative agreement outlining continued SRO services for all Martin County public schools. While that agreement was presented to the School Board for consideration on July 15, Board Members requested clarifying language related to the full scope of services, staffing, and reporting expectations for the SRO program. As a result, the Board did not adopt the agreement at that time.
Since that meeting, clarifying revisions were made in partnership with the Sheriff’s Office, and the updated agreement will be presented to the School Board for consideration during its Special Meeting scheduled for July 29.
“There will be no gap in service nor reason for concern,” Superintendent Michael Maine said. “We are grateful for our partnership with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and their commitment to keeping our students and staff safe. Our School Resource Officers will be in place and ready to welcome students back to school on day one.”
