Next month, Martin County voters will be asked whether or not they wish to approve a renewal of the existing millage referendum for operating experiences. The original half-mill property tax referendum was approved by voters in 2018. If the renewal is approved, the School Board would continue to allocate funding for an additional four years to the following categories: school safety and security, mental health programs, recruiting and retaining teachers and staff, professional development and academic initiatives.

Stuart, FL - During its Regular meeting tomorrow afternoon, The Martin County School Board is expected to approve funding allocations for the millage referendum renewal that will appear on voters' ballots in August. The School Board will also conduct its first review of the 2022-2023 Code of Student Conduct during the meeting, which will begin at 4:00 p.m. and be held at 500 SE Ocean Blvd., Stuart, FL, 34994.
In August 2018, Martin County voters approved an additional half-mill on real estate taxes for a period of four years to fund operational expenses in five categories: School safety and security (personnel), mental health programs, recruiting and retaining teachers, professional development, and academic initiatives.
In anticipation of the expiration of the original referendum, the School Board has been planning for the reauthorization of this funding since last year.  Two minor adjustments were made to the ballot language for the referendum renewal, allowing for increased flexibility with language indicating a collection of “up to” one half-mill (to account for the potential need being less than a full half-mill with pandemic grant funding in the near term) and adding “support staff” to the recruiting and retaining language for clarity.
During two public Workshops, and using suggestions submitted by members of the community earlier in the year, the School Board has reviewed and discussed several plans for exactly how much millage to collect and the designation of funded items within the five categories. The Board will discuss these items a final time tomorrow, making a decision on funding allocations that will provide clarity and transparency for Martin County voters who are preparing to cast their ballots. The primary election will be held on August 23, 2022.
The School Board is also expected to conduct its first review of the 2022-2023 Code of Student Conduct during tomorrow's meeting. The Code of Student Conduct is the document that outlines District/school policies and expectations for student behavior. The goal of the Code of Student Conduct is to promote a positive and supportive learning environment throughout the District.
