When it comes to using the Microsoft Word and Excel platforms, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who matches the skill of Tyler Stout, a sophomore at Jensen Beach High School. He has the credentials to prove it, having recently been named the Florida State Champion in Microsoft Office Word 2013 and Excel 2013 by the Certiport, Inc. Microsoft Office Specialist organization.

Certiport, Inc.’s Microsoft Office Specialist program offers state, national and international level competitions that test students’ skills in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Students participate in competitions by taking Microsoft Office Specialist exams in their respective area(s) of expertise, which are graded against their peers from around the state, country and world. By placing first in the Word and Excel categories during this year’s state competition, Tyler earned a berth to compete in the national championship, which has been scheduled for June 17-19, 2019, in Orlando.

Tyler is quick to share that the shock and surprise of earning a bid to the national competition hasn’t worn off.

“I felt really surprised because I wasn’t really trying to get into the competition,” he said. “When I realized how great of an opportunity it was, I decided to register to compete and prepare for the competition over the summer.”

As a student in the school’s Global Finance Academy, Tyler is taking a variety of business-related courses that will prepare him for a future career in the finance industry. Students enrolled in the Global Finance Academy are prepared to earn industry certifications in a variety of Microsoft Office programs, while also learning more about accounting, digital information technology and conducting business in a global economy.

“I believe that the Global Finance Academy has prepared me well for my future, as I plan on going to college for a business degree. Being skilled in Microsoft Office is something that can be used in many different jobs throughout the world,” Tyler said.

“Tyler’s achievement means that hard work, belief and dedication to the program will pay off,” said Tim Caffey, Global Finance instructor at Jensen Beach High School. “[Watching him] become a State Champion validates that.”
