Toby Overdorf - February 2023 Update

Good Afternoon, everyone. As the 2023 Committee Weeks come to an end, I would like to recap some of the highlights.

To start off February, I proudly joined Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis in Boca Raton, Florida, for a press conference to talk about some of the bills I will be carrying in the house this 2023 Legislative Session. HB 507 Federal Taxation and HB 509 Internal Revenue Service Civil Liability Trust Fund will give small business owners the power to fight back against the IRS if they are targeted due to political or ideological differences.

On Friday, the 10th, the Florida legislature concluded its 2nd Special Session. During this Special Session, we reviewed legislation on Intercollegiate Athlete Compensation and Rights, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, Transportation of Inspected Unauthorized Aliens, Statewide Prosecutor on election crimes, and Emergency Response. We took important steps to put Floridians first by empowering our student-athletes, putting our people over our corporations, and working to guarantee the security of our elections.

It was great to see Vice Mayor Caraballo and our Port St. Lucie delegation in Tallahassee on the 14th to discuss the appropriations projects we are working together on, as well as their legislative priorities. Together, we will continue to deliver results for the people of Port St. Lucie.

The 14th was also Space Day, which gave us the opportunity to see a rocket engine, meet two-time space pilot astronaut Tony Antonelli, and meet Florida college students doing research on space. I also met with an impressive group of satellite-building middle school students who came to advocate for STEM education and opportunities.

I also introduced my first bill of the session in the Civil Justice subcommittee, HB331 Liens and Bonds, which passed unanimously and will now make its way to Regulatory Reform and Economic Development subcommittee.

On the 21st and 22nd, we welcomed IRSC to the Capitol. On Tuesday, I met with IRSC President Dr. Tim Moore, Pruitt Campus President Andy Treadwell, and Board Chair and Vice Chair Tony George and Christa Luna to discuss their legislative priorities. The following day, I met with a group of IRSC Student Government Executive Officers.

On the 21st, I met with Teach Florida, an educational access advocacy organization, and joined their legislative reception that evening.

On the evening of the 22nd, I attended the Florida Keys Day reception as well as helping host the Wild Florida reception held by Conservation Florida in support of the Florida Wildlife Corridor

On Thursday morning, I met with Attorney General Ashley Moody to discuss our fight against human trafficking and the legislative steps we will be taking this session to make Florida safer. I also met with the legislative staff of the Office of Insurance Regulation to discuss the progress of our efforts to reduce the price of property insurance.

On Friday the 24th, we heard HB837 Civil Remedies in the Civil Justice subcommittee. After it passed through the subcommittee, I joined a press conference with Speaker Renner and Representatives Gregory and Fabricio on our Tort Reform efforts.

Thank you again for the opportunity to represent you in Tallahassee. I am excited to begin Session on March 7th and start delivering another year of results for the people of Florida.

Best regards,

Rep. Toby Overdorf
