United Way of Martin County Bestows Awards upon City of Stuart

This week, the United Way of Martin County presented the City of Stuart with awards for Collaborator of the Year 2022 and Top 10 Most Generous Workplace.

The Collaborator of the Year award was given for the City of Stuart's support of the United Way of Martin County's Born Learning Trails initiative, a series of interactive signs in parks that offer fun, active learning activities for young children and their families.

"When United Way was looking to bring the Born Learning Trails to our community, this entity jumped at the chance to bring not just one but three trails to the area. Working together, they supported outdoor interactive learning trails to help parents and caregivers turn excursions into fun learning moments," stated Carol Houwaart-Diez, President/CEO, United Way of Martin County.

The three City of Stuart Parks offering the Born Learning interactive trails are Flagler Park, Shepard Park and the Guy Davis Sports Complex.

The Top 10 Most Generous Workplace designation was a result of 75 City employees making a payroll pledge totaling over $15,000. The City of Stuart ranked #8 in the top 10.

Spooktacular Night At the Park a Spirited Event!

The City of Stuart and JD Parker Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) held the second annual Spooktacular Night at the Park last Friday (Oct. 21) evening. Stuart Memorial Park was the venue for the spirited event, which featured trunk or treat booths, a very scary haunted house produced by the 10th Street Community Center, food trucks, and a movie--"BeetleJuice"-- on the lawn.

Kids and adults in all sizes, some costumed and some not, enjoyed the family-friendly evening event.

It is estimated that 2,232 ghouls and goblins survived the very scary haunted house this year.

Composting Workshop

Sixteen (16) City of Stuart residents kicked off the City of Stuart's pilot composting initiative last fall. This group agreed to provide feedback on their composting experience including their opinions on the tumbler model composter, ease of use, durability, odor control and rodent determent.

This past summer, the program was offered city-wide to sanitation customers and 39 persons attended a one-hour "how-to" session, with seven more residents interested in future workshops.

Compost delivery is underway to 30 addresses and should be completed by mid-November.

To date, 46 households are participating in the residential composting program!

Additional composting workshops will be scheduled in the first quarter of 2023. For more information, or to sign up for future composting workshops, contact Anne Ellig, Program Manager, at (772) 600-1206.

Cold and Flu Season is Here

Take steps now to protect yourself and your loved ones

Martin County, FL – The Florida Department of Health in Martin County (DOH-Martin) is encouraging residents to take steps now to prevent getting sick from the flu.

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause serious illness or death.

Getting vaccinated every year is the best way to prevent the spread of the flu.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over the age of 6-months be vaccinated, and vaccination is especially important for those who are pregnant or have chronic health conditions. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against the flu to develop in the body.

The flu vaccine is readily available in the community via healthcare providers and local pharmacies. DOH-Martin provides free flu shots for uninsured and underinsured adults and school age children. Call 772-221-4000, option #3 for an appointment.

Practice Prevention:
  1. Cover your cough and sneeze
  2. Wash your hands often
  3. Exercise and eat nutritious foods
  4. Stay home when you are sick
  5. Get a flu shot
“SHOO THE FLU”: FREE CLINGS:
To encourage the community to practice flu prevention, DOH-Martin is offering free “Shoo The Flu” clings with prevention remind
ers. To request free clings for your office, email: CHD43WebFeedback@flhealth.gov
