Fundraiser to Benefit Family Promise was a Bed of Roses

The sky was brilliant blue and the enthusiasm was infectious at the 3rd annual Family Promise of Martin County Bed Races that took place on October 22 at First United Methodist Church of Stuart.

The 12 imaginative and creative beds that were entered started lining up well before the event’s10 a.m. start time and there were plenty of spectators and supporters on hand to cheer their efforts.

The businesses, nonprofits and organizations entering beds included First United Methodist Church of Stuart, Immanuel Lutheran Church, First United Methodist Church of Hobe Sound, Reverse the Door, Helping People Succeed, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Stuart Congregational Church/For The Love of Learning Private School, Unity Church, Hobe Sound Early Learning Center, Everyday Mission, Renntech Motorsports and The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast.

Bounce houses, a truck from Stuart Fire Rescue and a real race car were onsite, providing fun for kids of all ages. Everyone enjoyed the food truck from Happy Grill-More.
Judges of the Family Promise of Martin County Bed Races were Florida Representative Toby Overdorf, Stuart City Commissioner Eula Clarke and Stuart Police Chief Joseph Tumminelli.  Thanks to Chris Kerns (Washer) for serving as DJ and Allison Wigley for emceeing.
Almost $28,000 was raised through sponsorships, donations collected by bed race teams, People’s Choice voting at the event and revenue raised by silent auction sales.

Award winners included:
Unity of Stuart: Best Theme (Minion), and Most Money Raised
Immanuel Lutheran Church: Fastest Bed and People’s Choice
Renntech Motorsports: Best Construction

Proceeds from the Bed Race Fundraiser will be used to help provide shelter and housing for children and their families in the community. It also enables the nonprofit to provide counseling and education for parents so they can gain skills necessary to create long-term stability for their families. Additionally, funding helps supplement rent payment or provides first/last/security fees as our guests move into housing of their own.

Family Promise is a national organization and the only shelter in Martin County that keeps families together. Dollars raised in Martin County stay in Martin County.  For more information, visit
