The Boy Scouts of America, Gulf Stream Council is proud to report that we provided over 77,682 hours of community service in 2018.
These service hours were completed by scouts and adult leaders as they participated in food drives, such as Scouting for Food, Eagle Projects, conservation projects, as well as a variety of projects which benefitted schools, churches, communities, and other local organizations. Scouts also provided numerous hours of service to local veteran and military remembrance events, such as Wreaths across America and the MIA-POW-O-REE, at the local South Florida National Cemetery.
Summarized, the Gulf Stream Council provided 16,156 hours of community service to local veteran events, 24, 570 hours of service to local Eagle Scout Projects which benefit the surrounding community, 21,820 hours of service to local food drives, 878 hours of service to local religious organizations and 14,258 hours of service to other service organizations. In total, these hours have a dollar value to the community of $1,917,968.58. This calculation is based off the research by the Independent Sector, a coalition of charities and foundations whose research is vital to the nonprofit sector, which estimates the current value of a volunteer service hour at $24.69.
The Scout Oath includes a promise “…to help other people at all times”. Serving others teaches our members the invaluable traits of gratitude, servant leadership, and dependability. These young people live that promise every day, and we are humbled to facilitate such a significant impact in our communities.
