The Martin County Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), in partnership with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), brought light to a neighborhood in need. The Golden Gate LED Street Lighting Retrofit Project consisted of replacing 83 High-Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) lights with newer, more efficient Light-Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures.

"Working with FPL on this project is really exciting. We're building community together- revitalizing our unique and significant neighborhoods while fostering a strong sense of community and place," said Susan Kores, Manager of Martin County's Office of Community Development.

The historic community of Golden Gate, just south of the city of Stuart, is one of six community redevelopment areas in Martin County with a strategic plan for redevelopment, and the first neighborhood in Martin County to benefit from this venture with FPL. "At FPL, we are committed to providing safe, affordable and reliable energy to our customers," said Amy Brunjes, FPL regional external affairs manager. "LED street lights will brighten Martin County streets at night while reducing the county's energy usage. We value our partnership with the county and continue to find ways that we can help make the community a great place to live and work."

Projects like the LED Street Lighting Retrofit Project are also part of a concept called community policing through environmental design, which is based on the premise that with proper design, communities and public spaces can play a part in reducing fear and crime, and improve quality of life for residents. According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, that is exactly what's taking place in Golden Gate, as there has been a decrease in major calls for service.
