Water Treatment Plant Operator I, II or III - Public Works - Water Treatment Team

Characteristics of the Class

Under the general direction of the Team Leader II, is responsible for the operation of the Water Treatment Plant. Duties include ensuring the proper operation of the plant. Responsibilities consist of the delivery of safe drinking water that meets quality standards at the Federal and State regulatory agencies and of the Utilities Division to residential and commercial users in the service area.

Illustrative Duties (the following are highlights; a detailed job description is available in Human Resources)

• Performs chemical tests and laboratory analysis of water to ensure quality; also performs lab equipment calibration and the mixing and feeding of treatment chemicals.

• Maintains water reservoir levels, system pressure; industrial equipment; charts, meters and physical plant security.

• Operates emergency power generators, electrical switchgears, and various industrial equipment.

• Prepares reports and logs regarding the quality of water for regulatory agencies and city records; records equipment malfunctions.

• Performs general housekeeping duties and yard work as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Education/Licenses and Certifications High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented by two (2) years’ (3 years’ for Operator II, 5 years’ for Operator III) experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Must possess the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Drinking Water “A”, “B”, or “C” Treatment Plant Operator License. Must possess a valid Florida driver license.

Special Requirements

Essential Physical Skills and Environmental Conditions Task involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, reaching, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (25-50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy (100+ pound) items; or may involve the complex operation of gasoline, electric, or diesel-powered machinery or shop equipment requiring the manipulation of multiple controls, fine adjustments or both; or the sustained operation, on a production basis, with associated equipment. Task requires that work be performed in adverse environmental conditions. Task requires color, sound, odor, texture, depth and visual perception and discrimination. Task requires oral and written communications ability.
