Utility Maintenance Mechanic - Public Works - Water Treatment

Characteristics of the Class

Under the general direction of the Plant Services Manager, incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and repair of water and wastewater plant equipment, wells, lift stations, sewage collection system, machinery, pipes etc. Responsibilities include assuring the efficient and safe mechanical and electrical operation of machinery and equipment; assisting in the installation of new equipment and repairing and maintaining equipment. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring screening for illegal substance and alcohol use.

Illustrative Duties (the following are highlights; a detailed job description is available in Human Resources)

• Operates various equipment, including but not limited to welders, torches, standard and specialized hand and power tools.

• Inspects, repairs, services, paints and maintains structures, pumps, wells, motors and equipment.

• Replaces pumps, blowers, motors, bearings, broken valves, leaky pipes and faulty equipment as directed.

• Works with chemicals; cleans chemical spills.

• Enters and works in confined spaces in conformance with established confined space permit protocols.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented by three (3) years’ experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must have a working knowledge associated with the use of full-face respirator.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class "B".
