CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
Under the direction of the Fire Chief, performs field work inspecting buildings and various installations for fire hazards and fire code compliance. Duties may involve an element of personal danger and incumbents must be capable of functioning as an integral part of a work unit in order to ensure the safe and efficient performance of duties. Work is performed in accordance with direct instructions and well-defined routines. Work is reviewed through written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Inspects buildings and various installations for fire hazards.
2. Responsible for field enforcement of all local and state fire prevention laws and ordinances.
3. Based on state regulations, defines and explains fire codes to professional people such as contractors, architects and engineers.
4. Conducts site inspections.
5. Submits reports on inspections on the proper forms to the Fire Chief in a timely manner.

6. Enters and maintains inspection data.

7. Cooperates fully with the State Fire Marshal’s Office,
Police Department, Sheriff’s Department, and all other law
or code enforcement agencies.

REQUIREMENTS
A. Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent. At minimum must possess
and maintain a current State of Florida Firesafety
Inspector I certification. A minimum of one (1) year of
field work in code inspection experience preferred.
Must possess a valid Florida Drivers License.
B. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of applicable local and Standard Building Codes.
Knowledge of City and State laws, regulations, codes and
ordinances governing building standards.
Knowledge of fire safety laws and effective inspection
methods and techniques.
Knowledge of fire hazards involved in various types of
construction and in the storage of flammables, and
explosives.
Knowledge of supervised fire alarm circuits, standpipe and
fire sprinklers installations.
Ability to apply fire safety codes and ordinances and to
enforce all regulations tactfully, firmly and impartially.
Ability to work from prints, plans, and specifications.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with other employees and the general public.
Ability to compile and submit clear and concise reports as required.
Ability to work with data entry and spreadsheets by using current software programs such as Excel, and Pentamation.
C. Physical Requirements:
Task involves frequent walking at times over rough or uneven surfaces, sitting, standing, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping; some lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight (30 plus pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop keyboard or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations. Task may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard.
D. Environmental Requirements:
Task requires that work be performed in adverse environmental conditions, close quarters or limited space areas and possible hazardous conditions
