Distribution & Collection Apprentice

Under the supervision of the Team Leader II or Field Services Manager, performs installation, maintenance and repair of municipal low-pressure sewer, wastewater collection and water distribution systems. Work includes connection of fittings, excavation for the installation of lines, placement, removal and minor repair to water meters and the testing of water pressure as required. Work is reviewed through observation and adherence to established policies and procedures. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Installs and services water and wastewater mains; excavates trenches for main placement, installation, maintenance, and repair. 2. Installs residential and commercial low-pressure sewer system tanks, pumps, service lines, laterals and taps and terminates floats and pumps to control panels. Assists with restoration of properties following installation and abandonment of septic tanks. 3. Assists in locating breaks in utility lines so as to effect repair; checks manholes for blockage. 4. Assists in repair and replacement of sewer lines; assists in the inspection of sewer lines for defects. 5. Operates motor vehicles to transport personnel and supplies to work site. 6. Performs general grounds and non-skilled level facilities maintenance and cleaning. 7. Must be available to be on call and work overtime as needed. Training and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class “B” with tanker endorsement or the ability to acquire one within 12  months of hire. B. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Ability to learn the practices and materials utilized in the installation and maintenance of a water and wastewater utility system. Ability to learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work. Ability to understand and follow oral and written
instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees. Ability to use hand tools, gas saw, tamper, jackhammers, cement mixers, and various power tools. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions. C. Physical Requirements: Duties involve exposure to unsanitary wastes and occasional
adverse weather conditions. Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of heavy physical tasks  such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, stretching and working in confined spaces, lifting, pushing, pulling moderate (50 pounds) to heavy (100+ pounds) items. Task involves the frequent use of coordinative and manipulative skills in performing a variety of tasks with the full range of hand-eye  coordination with power tools and shop equipment; or the skilled and complex operation of heavy equipment calling for adherence to exacting standards of depth, grade, dimensions, and contours. D. Environmental Requirements:
Task requires that work be performed in adverse environmental conditions. This position is considered “Mission Critical” (aka  “Essential”) and is required to report to duty before, during, and immediately after a civil emergency.
