Diesel/Gas Mechanic - Vehicle Maintenance

Characteristics of the Class

Under the general supervision of the Team Leader II, incumbent is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs of a variety of diesel/gas vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include but are not limited to troubleshooting and diagnosing problems on a variety of diesel/gas equipment. This is a safety sensitive position requiring screening for illegal substance and alcohol use.

Repairs, maintains and/or overhauls diesel and gas, standard and specializedvehicles including ladder trucks, pumpers, garbage trucks, sweepers, and avariety of special equipment including engines, brakes, transmissions, springs,rear-end and front loaders, hydraulics, fuel systems, air systems and air leaks.

Troubleshoots, analyzes and diagnoses a variety of vehicle problems includingautomobiles, trucks, tractors, fire equipment, hydraulic operated pumps, smallengine equipment and other equipment as necessary.

Responds to road-service calls in a timely manner, services and repairsdisabled vehicles and equipment promptly.

Uses specialized hand and power tools to make and complete repairsincluding welding and fabrication tools and materials.

Assists in maintaining inventory and equipment records; requisitions parts, supplies, tools, equipment and other items as directed.

Minimum Qualifications and Education/Licenses and Certifications

High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented with two (2) years’ experience at a journey-level in diesel and gas engines and other automotive equipment repair; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience must have included working with and maintaining automotive equipment with hydraulics, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Must possess valid Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class "B", with air brake endorsement.

Essential Physical Skills and Environmental Conditions

Task involves the continuous operation of hand and power tools and the full range of shop equipment to very exacting tolerances calling for full range of eye-hand coordination and of sensory and manipulative ability in order to achieve full production to acceptable standards. Task may involve occasional heavy lifting or moving (100+ pound) objects, but the emphasis is placed upon the coordination and manipulation skills. Task involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of standing and walking over rough surfaces, bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, stretching, reaching, stretching and working in confined spaces. Task requires that work be performed in adverse environmental conditions. Task requires sound, visual, color, depth and texture perception and discrimination. Task requires oral and written communications ability.
