In a very demanding competition before three judges who are highly accomplished professional musicians not affiliated with the organization, string bass performer Shane Savage played his way to the top to become the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony’s 2018 Concerto Competition Winner. Shane will receive a cash prize and now has the opportunity to perform the Koussevitzky Double Bass Concerto with the orchestra in its spring concert, PRINCESS DREAMS.
Concert venues are The Lyric Theatre on Monday, April 16, 2018; the Eissey Campus Theatre at Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens on Monday, April 23, 2018, and the Church of the Good Shepherd in Tequesta on Monday, April 30, 2018. Concerts begin at 7 PM.
Other concerto contestants providing particularly robust competition this year were: Charlotte Strohl (flute), Abby Bracken (oboe), Sophie Bracken (clarinet), Ava Gunter (violin), Andrea Lora (violin), Brandon Gunter (cello), Leif Clark (cello), Adam Savage (viola), and Joshua Zhuang (piano). All contestants must first provide a CD of their accompanied performance to qualify for the live performance before the judges. This year’s judges include Cindy Kessler (piano) of the Stuart School of Music; the recent gold medal winner of the Cincinnati International Violin Competition, Yasa Poletaeva; and Alan Hopper (bassoon/woodwinds), the CEO of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra.
Tickets for the upcoming concert for the Lyric Theatre performance are $20.00 adults / $15.00 students. Tickets for Eissey Campus Theatre are $15.00 adults / $7.00 students and available at the door. Educating to preserve, create, and celebrate our musical heritage, the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony has served our community as one of its finest musical arts organizations for young musicians and orchestra audiences since 1987. The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony is an all volunteer, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization composed of the most talented student musicians from Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and northern Palm Beach counties.
The mission of the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony is to provide challenging experiences in orchestral and individual performance for student musicians, to broaden their technical skills and artistic expression, to instill professionalism, and to enhance enjoyment of the musical talents individually and for their audiences.
The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony operates on funding through performance revenue, private contributions, and orchestra member dues. For 30 years, the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony has provided music education and performance opportunities to young musicians of the Treasure Coast. Additionally, the organization has provided over $120,000.00 in scholarships and grants to its member musicians.
