Shutdown's Impact on Martin County

January 23, 2019
The federal government has been shut down for an unprecedented 31 days, and it is unclear when it will reopen. Meanwhile, hardworking people right here in Martin County are struggling to make ends meet. House of Hope has experienced an influx of inquiries regarding the local federal employees and government assistance recipients who are worried about keeping food on the table if the shutdown continues. We felt it was very important to reach out about how our community can get involved to help the tens of thousands of neighbors who are now experiencing significant hardship.

Here's what we know about how the shutdown is impacting food assistance so far:
  • In Martin County, approximately 200 furloughed federal employee have been issued paychecks for $0.00 House of Hope is preparing to provide critical resources for these residents who may have never before needed safety net services.
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), provides monetary food assistance for income eligible individuals and families. The program is currently funded through February. On January 20, February benefits were released early. In the event that the shutdown does not end in February, DCF will immediately notify recipients about the status of future assistance.
  • Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), provides supplemental foods to low-income pregnant women and mothers, and to infants and children up to age five. The program is currently only funded through February.
  • The Medicaid Program is funded through 2019 so the shutdown does not impact Medicaid recipients. Temporary cash assistance is available at least through the month of February.
  • The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), provides nutritious food to pantries & food banks across the country. TEFAP food deliveries should be available without interruption through March.
Funding for children's programs is available through March, including free and reduced price school breakfast and lunch. If income eligible, furloughed federal employees and their families may apply for the school meals program.
