The Martin County School District has partnered with the Center for Constitutional Values to bring a hands-on civics lesson to high school students! The annual Constitutional Academic Competitions allow local Youth in Government students to research a designated constitutional issue and present their arguments in a debate-style format before a sitting judge. Students are competing for scholarship funds and the chance to move on to additional levels of competition.

WHAT: 4th annual Constitutional Academic Competitions. Youth in Government students from each Martin County high school are invited to compete in an intra-school competition, whereby two teams of two students debate a Constitutional issue before a presiding judge. This year's question is "Does the U.S. Constitution provide to the states any powers to control immigration?"
Each member of the winning team will earn a $250 scholarship and the opportunity to advance to the next round of the competition, which will be held in April. The judges listed above will adjudicate the events, which will consist of each team giving an opening statement, followed by open dialogue for 30 minutes between team members and the judge. Each team will then provide a closing statement, and the presiding judge will determine the winning team.
